Market risk is the risk involved with those investments which are directly related to the market which involves chances to incur loss due to volatile nature of the market. Volatility here refers to the adverse price movements for one or more instruments which could have a negative impact on one’s portfolio. Market risk can be categorized in the following terms:

Inflation risk - It is the risk of increase in the inflation rate due to which the overall value of investment may reduce. It is primarily related to the money market instruments.

Interest rate risk - It is the risk related to the debt instruments which involves fluctuations in the interest rates. When there is a rise in the interest rate, the bond prices go down, which makes bonds less attractive towards investors.

Foreign Exchange Risk - Foreign exchange risk arises due to the fluctuations in the currency exchange rates. The most affected by this risk are the multi national companies.

Credit risk - The credit risk is the type of risk which occurs in the case of default in terms of unable to pay what was promised as interest. The debt funds are mostly affected by the credit risk.

Geopolitical risk - It is the risk of loss in value of investment due to a country’s political decisions and disruptions.
